License

Mobile Manager is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, Version 2.

History

The project has its origins in Escritorio movistar, the official 3G connection manager from movistar. After releasing Escritorio movistar into the public domain, we decided to isolate the device handling core functionality and promote it as an open source project on its own.

Free technology

Although originated inside a telephony operator, Mobile Manager is meant to serve as a universal mobile connectivity component. That means that you can freely use regardless of the geographical location and the operator the device happens to be attached to. Mobile Manager is offered to the community as a sign of Telefónica Móviles' commitment to free technologies and in the hope that it can fill in the existing void in native 3G/WWAN device handling in Linux environments. Further development of the project will be made in the open, and contributions from anybody within the open source community are welcomed.

Open movilforum

Mobile Manager is part of Open movilforum, an initiative of Telefónica Móviles to provide independent developers with free technologies to foster the creation of mobile services, applications and Internet mashups.

About Mobile Manager Mascot

The garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) is a little rodent very easily identifiable because of the black marks around its eyes that makes it look as if it's wearing a mask (hence its name in Spanish, "lirón careto" or masked dourmouse). We adopted this forest dweller as Mobile Manager mascot because it is a lovely animal and there are plenty of them in Spain, where most of us in the project happen to be from.
